Sports Fund must drive football development, says Sports Minister Kofi Adams

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has urged football stakeholders to focus on building a sustainable football system, stressing that the Ghana Sports Fund should be used to develop capacity rather than solve existing financial challenges.

Speaking at the 32nd Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday, Adams said the government views the Sports Fund as a key instrument for long-term growth across the sporting sector.

He noted that while football would benefit from the fund, resources must be channelled into initiatives that deliver measurable results and strengthen the foundations of the game.

“Government has another important instrument: the Ghana Sports Fund,” Adams told delegates at the Congress.

“Football will certainly benefit from the Fund, but let me be clear. It cannot become another account from which we finance existing problems. It must build capacity.”

The minister explained that investments made through the fund should lead to tangible improvements at all levels of the sport, including youth development, coaching, infrastructure and club administration.

“If we invest in Colts football, we must see players developed. If we invest in coaching, we must see qualified coaches working. If we invest in facilities, they must be used. If we invest in clubs, we must see stronger institutions,” he said.

Adams’ remarks form part of the government’s broader push to ensure that funding allocated to sport delivers long-term value and contributes to the growth of football and other sporting disciplines across the country.
