The Music Is Bigger Than All Of Us – DJ Big N Urges Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy To Unite
Disc jockey Nonso Temisan Ajufo, popularly known as DJ Big N, has penned a passionate open letter to Afrobeats superstars Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, urging them to prioritise unity over rivalry for the sake of the genre.
In a lengthy post shared on his Instagram page on Saturday, the veteran DJ reflected on the journey of African music and the role the three artistes have played in its global rise.
The Mavin’s in-house DJ recalled the early days when the three stars believed in their craft despite the odds, long before the Grammys, sold-out arenas, and global recognition. He acknowledged their individual achievements but reminded them that the mountain of “unity” is left to climb.
“You don’t have to be best friends. You don’t have to holiday together. But respect can exist where friendship doesn’t. And dialogue can exist where disagreement does,” he wrote.
He also addressed the reality of long-standing relationships, noting that twenty friends cannot play together for twenty years without disagreements. He emphasised that pride and ego should not stand in the way of mutual respect.
Addressing the trio, he urged them to come to the table without cameras, managers, or fan bases, and simply talk as three African men who changed the course of music.
“Reconciliation doesn’t always mean becoming friends again. Sometimes it simply means: I respect what you have built. You respect what I have built. And neither of us needs to destroy the other for us both to exist,” he added.
The top-billed act also reminded them that nobody built the Afrobeats movement alone, emphasizing the importance of every musical contribution from Artistes to producers and fans.
DJ Big N stressed that they are custodians of something that will outlive them all, and that the music is bigger than any individual ego.
Admonishing them, he urged them to give the culture that moment, and more importantly, to give themselves that moment.
“Three kings don’t have to destroy each other for every crown to shine. There is enough sky for every star. There is enough room at the table,” he said.
