Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a major setback in their bid to feature at the 2027 Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in their qualification playoff.

The defeat means Nigeria will miss the global tournament, despite receiving another opportunity to secure qualification after their disappointing exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Falcons struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half, with neither side able to break the deadlock before the interval.

South Africa, however, returned from the break with greater intensity and quickly took control of the contest.

Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring before Refiloe Jane added another goal to put the hosts in a commanding position.

Nigeria were forced to chase the game and eventually reduced the deficit through Christy Ucheibe, who converted from the penalty spot.

Despite their late push, the Falcons could not find the equaliser needed to force extra time. South Africa held on to claim the crucial victory and book their place at the 2027 World Cup.

The result represents a significant disappointment for Nigerian football. For the first time, both the Super Falcons and Super Eagles have failed to qualify for their respective World Cups in the same cycle.

The loss will raise questions about Nigeria’s preparation and performance in crucial matches, while South Africa’s success further highlights the growing competitiveness of women’s football on the continent.
