Ghanaian highlife musician Samuel Ofori Amponsah has opened up about the personal struggles that influenced his decision to temporarily move from highlife music to gospel.

Speaking to Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 22, 2026, the “Otoolege” hitmaker said his relationship with God remains an important part of his life, even though he does not necessarily attend church regularly.

“I do pray a lot. Christianity is a relationship with God but not necessarily me going to church. With me, the connection with God is still there,” he said.

Ofori Amponsah said he believes having a close relationship with God is more important than simply attending church.

“The way things are among us humans, being close to God is far better and it’s the most important thing that I think we should do,” he added.

Why he left highlife for gospel

Reflecting on his career, the musician acknowledged that he has made mistakes and disappointed people at different points in his life.

He identified his decision to leave highlife for gospel music as one of the choices that disappointed some of his fans.

“One of the disappointments was when I decided to switch from highlife to gospel and people didn’t really understand why,” he explained.

According to Ofori Amponsah, the decision was influenced by personal challenges he was experiencing at the time, as well as the pressure that came with fame.

“Musicians go through a lot and if you don’t take care, you wouldn’t know what to do with your life because of the pressure of fame,” he said.

He explained that his circumstances pushed him to seek God more closely, describing the decision as one that was crucial to his survival.

“That time, the things that were happening to me, I had to get closer to God more. If I didn’t take that decision then, I wouldn’t have been alive by now,” he revealed. ‘It’s not everything that I could explain.’

Ofori Amponsah appealed to fans who felt disappointed by his career switch to forgive him, explaining that he was unable to disclose the personal reasons behind the decision at the time.

“They should forgive me, but it’s not everything that I could explain,” he said.

The musician said he plans to document his experiences in a book someday, which he believes will give people a better understanding of the decisions he made during that period.

“One day, I will write everything in a book so that people will understand. Every decision I took back then had a meaning, so you all should forgive me,” he added.
