Abia Warriors have officially started preparations for the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season as the club looks to improve on last season’s performance.

The Umuahia-based side held its opening pre-season training session on Monday at the Umuahia Township Stadium, with players returning to work after the off-season break.

Head coach Imama Amapakabo oversaw the first workout as the team began laying the foundation for the new campaign.

The early start to training reflects the club’s determination to compete strongly when the new NPFL season gets underway later this year.

Coaches and players are expected to focus on improving fitness levels, tactical organisation and team chemistry during the pre-season programme.

Abia Warriors narrowly missed the opportunity to play continental football after finishing seventh in the NPFL standings last season.

The club will now aim to challenge higher up the table and secure one of the coveted qualification spots.

Management is also expected to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes. New arrivals could be brought in to address key areas and increase competition for places ahead of the new campaign.

Supporters will be hoping the combination of early preparations and quality additions can help the team achieve better results than last season.

The 2026/27 NPFL season is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 28, giving Abia Warriors several weeks to fine-tune their squad and complete their pre-season programme before competitive action resumes.
