European football nations are expected to abandon their threat to boycott FIFA competitions after receiving assurances from the world football governing body, according to reports.

UEFA had raised the possibility of a boycott last month amid growing tensions with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The dispute followed a controversial proposal involving the sale of shares in a commercial venture connected to the World Cup.

Although Infantino eventually dropped the proposal, UEFA continued to demand guarantees that similar plans would not be pursued in the future.

European football officials are now understood to have received the assurances they were seeking.

The matter is expected to be discussed at meetings in Monaco on Thursday, where UEFA officials will consider the next steps.

The development is likely to remove the immediate threat of a European boycott of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

England and other European nations are therefore expected to take part in the tournament as originally scheduled.

The dispute has added to wider political tensions within FIFA, with UEFA among those challenging Infantino’s leadership. Reports suggest that FIFA vice presidents from several regions have also supported efforts to question the direction of the organisation.

The U-20 Women’s World Cup will provide Infantino with an opportunity to make a public appearance as FIFA president despite the ongoing disagreements.

Attention will later turn to the 2027 Women’s World Cup and FIFA’s presidential election, scheduled for March, with potential candidates required to secure the backing of at least five football associations before the November deadline.
