The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to disregard a flyer circulating on social media claiming that the use of AirPods, earphones and other audio devices while driving or riding is prohibited under Ghanaian law.

The Service said the flyer did not originate from the Ghana Police Service and was neither issued nor authorised by it.

The Police said its Cybercrime Unit is investigating the false publication and working to identify those behind its circulation.

“The Service wishes to clarify that the flyer is not a communication of the Ghana Police Service. The Service has neither issued nor authorised the said publication,” the Police said in a social media statement on Tuesday, August 18.

The Police, however, cautioned motorists and riders against activities or devices that could distract them or affect their hearing, vehicle control or awareness of surrounding traffic.

“Motorists and riders should therefore endeavour to avoid distractions and exercise maximum care while on the road,” the Service said.

It further urged motorists, motorcyclists and other road users to familiarise themselves with and comply with the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519).

Under Regulation 132 of L.I. 2519, a person is prohibited from driving while holding, using or operating a cellular or mobile telephone or another communication device in one or both hands.

The regulation defines a communication device as one that performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving information. It includes functions such as sending or receiving messages, images and accessing the internet.
