Peter Obi warns that forged credentials will trigger a violent collapse of Nigerian democracy

The integrity of Nigeria’s political future is hanging by a thread as Peter Obi warns of an impending era of violence if the culture of certificate forgery among the nation’s elite remains unchecked. The former Labour Party presidential candidate issued a blistering critique of the country’s declining leadership standards, arguing that when credibility and authentic qualifications are treated as optional, the foundational pillars of the state begin to crumble.
Obi’s remarks follow a series of unsettling events, including a brazen attack on the African Democratic Congress office in Cross River State. He characterized the destruction of party property by unidentified thugs as a direct assault on the democratic process itself, noting that the lack of accountability for such acts reflects a dangerous descent into lawlessness. According to Obi, the message being sent to the Nigerian public is one of deep instability, where fraud is prioritized over the merit required to lead a modern nation.
The controversy surrounding academic credentials has reached a fever pitch following legal disclosures regarding President Bola Tinubu’s records at Chicago State University. During a recent deposition in the United States, school officials stated they could not authenticate the specific diploma presented to Nigeria’s electoral commission. The registrar confirmed that while the institution has records of a student by that name, the physical certificate submitted for the 2023 election was not an official document issued by the university.
This revelation, the result of a rigorous legal challenge by opposition leader Atiku Abubakar in an Illinois federal court, has intensified the debate over the legitimacy of Nigeria’s highest office. For Obi and many observers, the issue transcends simple paperwork; it represents a systemic failure that threatens to replace the rule of law with a cycle of chaos that will ultimately jeopardize the safety and prosperity of future generations.
