Nigerian superstar Davido is ditching the Western sound that made him a global icon to reclaim his African roots.

The Great Homecoming
After years of conquering global arenas and rubbing shoulders with the elite at the Grammy Awards, Davido is ready to flip the script. In a candid conversation on BBC 1Xtra, the Afrobeats heavyweight announced a radical shift in his creative direction. His upcoming sixth studio album will intentionally bypass Western pop influences in favor of a raw, unapologetically African sound.
Davido explained that having achieved every milestone the international industry has to offer, he no longer feels the need to cater to foreign ears. He described his new recordings as “very, very Davido African,” signaling a move away from the polished crossover attempts that often define modern Afrobeats.
Prioritizing the Home Front
This pivot is not just about the music but about the audience. While many of his peers are doubling down on their search for American validation, Davido is doubling down on Nigeria. His 2025 album, 5ive, already proved that his most loyal fan base remains on the continent. By touring cities like Ibadan and Enugu at a time when other major stars were focusing exclusively on London or New York, he sent a clear message that the Nigerian market is his priority.
A Legacy Beyond the Grammys
Davido’s new mission appears to be a conscious effort to decenter the West. By refocusing on local rhythms and domestic tours, he is challenging the notion that an artist’s success is measured only by their standing in overseas markets. This “back to basics” approach suggests that for Davido, the ultimate victory isn’t another trophy in Los Angeles, but a lasting impact in Lagos and across the African continent.
