Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted 442 packets of cannabis-infused cookies and gummies weighing 309.4 kilogrammes at the TinCan Island Port Complex in Lagos.

The illicit consignment, concealed in a 40-foot container, was discovered on Tuesday, August 4, during a joint examination conducted by NDLEA officers, the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies.

A statement issued on Sunday by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said 73 cartons containing the cannabis-infused confectioneries were recovered, while a suspect, identified as Larry Nnaji, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

The seizure was among a series of major drug interceptions and arrests recorded by NDLEA operatives across several states in the country between August 3 and 8.

In Oyo State, operatives acting on credible intelligence raided a drug warehouse at Elebure village in Orire Local Government Area on Monday, August 3, recovering 731.03kg of illicit drugs.

A 57-year-old suspect, Felicia Thompson, was arrested during the operation, while her alleged partner, Thompson Vincent Nwaka, is currently at large.

In Edo State, NDLEA operatives, supported by soldiers, recovered 65 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 604.5kg at Ewe Luleha in Owan West Local Government Area on Wednesday, August 5.

Similarly, a 31-year-old drug joint operator, Chibuike Charles, was arrested during a raid at his Samec by Powerline base in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State on Thursday, August 6.

Operatives recovered 7kg of skunk from the premises.

In Lagos, the agency also announced the arrest of a wanted drug dealer, Adome Claude Sikuru, at the Fibre Market drug jungle in Badagry on Saturday, August 8, following a three-month manhunt.

At the time of his arrest, 88.5kg of skunk was recovered from him.

Commending officers and men of the Drug Enforcement Administration and Investigations Directorate, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Abia, Seme and TinCan commands for their successes, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), urged personnel to sustain the momentum.

Marwa also directed officers to maintain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control, combining enforcement operations with other measures aimed at addressing the drug problem.
