The Ghana Police Service and MTN Ghana have strengthened their collaboration on road safety, with authorities highlighting the impressive performance of MTN drivers who have maintained a zero-crash record since the partnership began last year.

The initiative is aimed at improving driver compliance, promoting responsible driving and increasing awareness of road traffic regulations as Ghana steps up efforts to reduce road crashes.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director in charge of Administration, Research and Training at the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), made the disclosure at a road safety training workshop organised for MTN vehicle users at the company’s Nhyiaeso Main Office in Kumasi.

ACP Obeng said the collaboration had already produced tangible results, particularly in improving the safety standards of vehicles operated by MTN drivers.

“Since we did it last year, we’ve seen enhanced safe use of vehicles and maintained a zero-crash record. It’s natural to keep pushing,” he stated.

He explained that the training forms part of a wider strategy to equip corporate drivers with knowledge of road traffic laws, safe driving techniques and emerging digital traffic enforcement and compliance systems.

According to him, corporate partnerships such as the one between the Police and MTN Ghana are essential to promoting road safety beyond traditional enforcement approaches.

He noted that educating drivers and encouraging voluntary compliance could complement policing efforts while helping to reduce preventable crashes and their devastating consequences.

DVLA Calls for Proactive Approach
The Acting Director of the Inspectorate Division of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Kwasi Bonah Otuo Serebour, also praised MTN Ghana for placing road safety high on its corporate agenda.

He said Ghana needed to move increasingly towards a proactive road safety system rather than waiting for crashes to occur before taking action.

Mr. Serebour expressed concern about the continued loss of lives and destruction of property through road crashes, stressing that companies had an important role to play in reversing the trend.

He urged corporate organisations to ensure that their drivers were properly trained and that their vehicles met all prescribed safety requirements.

Training to Reach All Regions
More than 300 MTN vehicle users are benefiting from the current training programme.

The organisers indicated that similar training sessions would be rolled out in all regional capitals, giving more corporate drivers the opportunity to improve their knowledge of road safety and traffic compliance.

The Police-MTN collaboration is therefore being positioned as a model for stronger public-private partnerships in road safety, with the ultimate objective of saving lives, protecting property and promoting safer roads across Ghana.
