Morocco took a significant step toward the knockout stage of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Algeria 1-0 in a tense Group A encounter on Thursday.

The hosts were pushed all the way by a determined Algerian side that defended with discipline and limited Morocco’s attacking opportunities for much of the contest.

Despite enjoying more possession and the backing of a passionate home crowd, the Atlas Lionesses struggled to break through Algeria’s organized defensive setup.

The first half ended without a goal, with both teams showing plenty of determination but lacking the cutting edge needed in the final third.

Algeria remained compact throughout the match and looked capable of frustrating their rivals into settling for a draw.

However, Morocco’s persistence eventually paid off in the closing stages. With just six minutes remaining, Sanaa Mssoudy found the decisive breakthrough, calmly converting the opportunity to send the home fans into celebration and secure an important three points.

The victory keeps Morocco perfect after two matches, lifting them to six points at the top of Group A and placing them in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The result also boosts their confidence as they continue their quest for a maiden WAFCON title on home soil.

Algeria, meanwhile, remain on three points after two games and will now face a crucial final group fixture in their bid to advance.

Senegal’s earlier 1-0 victory over Kenya means the race for the remaining qualification spots in Group A remains wide open heading into the last round of matches, promising an exciting finish to the group stage.
