Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola endured mixed emotions in his first game in charge after Joe Gomez suffered an early injury during the Reds’ 4-2 pre-season victory over Sunderland in Nashville.

The Merseyside club kicked off their United States tour with an entertaining win thanks to goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas.

While the result offered encouraging signs for Iraola’s new era, the loss of Gomez dampened the celebrations.

The experienced defender, who captained Liverpool on the day, was forced off just eight minutes into the contest after picking up an injury.

Speaking after the match, Iraola admitted Gomez’s setback was the biggest disappointment of an otherwise positive outing.

Liverpool are already dealing with defensive concerns ahead of the new campaign. Summer signing Jeremy Jacquet is still regaining full fitness after a lengthy spell out with a shoulder injury, while Giovanni Leoni is continuing his recovery from a long-term absence.

The situation leaves Iraola with limited options at the back as preparations for the season continue.

Despite the injury concerns, the Spanish coach was pleased with several aspects of his team’s display. He acknowledged that the players looked physically tired after intense training sessions but believes the match provided a valuable opportunity to assess the squad and identify areas for improvement.

Liverpool will continue their pre-season schedule with friendlies against Wrexham and Leeds United, where Iraola hopes to build momentum before the Premier League campaign begins.

The manager also confirmed that Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Ryan Gravenberch have rejoined the squad following their extended post-World Cup breaks and are expected to feature soon.
