I Wasn’t Sure I Scored – SemiAjayi Reveals After Man United Shock

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Nigeria international Semi Ajayi has revealed that he was initially unsure whether he had scored Hull City’s opening goal during their memorable 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League.

The defender reacted fastest in the 17th minute after Oli McBurnie’s attempt was saved, firing the rebound into the net to give Hull the lead on their return to the English top flight.

The goal ended Hull’s eight-year wait for a Premier League goal and marked Ajayi’s first goal in the competition since January 2021, when he scored for West Bromwich Albion against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Interestingly, Semi Ajayi admitted that he and McBurnie were both uncertain about who had actually scored because of the sequence of events.

According to the Nigerian, McBurnie initially celebrated his effort before asking whether Ajayi had got the final touch.

Ajayi said the identity of the scorer was not particularly important to him at that moment, as he was simply delighted that Hull had taken the lead against one of England’s biggest clubs.

The 32-year-old described the goal as the reward for Hull’s impressive start, having created several opportunities before finally breaking United’s resistance.

Hull strengthened their advantage before the interval when Nobel Mendy added a second goal, securing a remarkable opening-day victory.

The result was historic, as Hull recorded their first-ever Premier League win over Manchester United and ended a long wait for a league victory against the Red Devils.

Semi Ajayi and Hull will next face Stoke City in the League Cup on Tuesday.
