Former Ghanaian professional boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been arrested over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The Accra Regional Police Command said Ayitey Powers was arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, after a video circulated on social media in which he allegedly threatened the life of the NSA boss.

Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine the appropriate action under the law. 

The arrest follows a call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for police action against Ayitey Powers over the alleged threats. The committee said the alleged conduct was unacceptable and had also announced disciplinary proceedings against the former boxer.

The dispute comes against the backdrop of tensions between Ayitey Powers and the administration of Ghana boxing. The former boxer has previously raised concerns over financial losses from a boxing event that was cancelled after the National Sports Authority suspended boxing activities following the death of boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey.

Ayitey Powers has also publicly criticised members of the current boxing interim committee, including its chairman Samir Captan and vice-chairman, boxing legend Azumah Nelson. The GBIMC cited such previous comments when calling for police intervention.

The former boxer claims the NSA boss promises him compensation for investments made towards the cancelled show. He has therefore over the past few months, often taken to social media, in similar utterances to demand justice from the NSA and its Director-General. 

The Command has also urged the public not to spread unverified information while the investigation continues.
