Authorities in Ghana have dealt a significant blow to illegal logging operations following a high profile enforcement exercise across the Ahafo and Ashanti Regions. On Sunday, March 8, 2025, the National Timber Monitoring Team intercepted 15 cargo trucks filled with illicitly harvested timber.

The operation was led by Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku, Chairman of the National Timber Monitoring Team, in close coordination with the Forestry Commission of Ghana. Officers targeted several key areas including the communities of Konkontreso, Mabang, and Akwasiase. Upon inspection, none of the drivers could provide the legal permits or documentation required to transport the wood.

Beyond the roadside interceptions, the monitoring team discovered and shut down an unauthorized sawmill in Konkontreso. The facility was found to be processing timber without any formal approval or oversight from the Forestry Commission.

Speaking on the urgency of the situation, Alhaji Doku emphasized that these enforcement actions are vital for the survival of Ghana’s forest reserves. He explained that many operators continue to bypass conservation laws by moving timber without permits, a practice that severely undermines national environmental goals.

The Chairman issued a clear warning to all industry players, stating that the monitoring team has intensified road patrols and surveillance. He urged individuals and businesses to secure the proper legal documentation before engaging in timber activities or face the full weight of the law. This latest crackdown serves as a firm reminder of the government’s commitment to protecting natural resources and eliminating illegal chainsaw operations across the country.
