Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has called for greater transparency and accountability regarding the funding allocated to the Ghana Premier League ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The GFA announced on 20 August a significant financial package aimed at boosting the domestic top flight, including a commitment to provide each Premier League club with GH¢1 million before the start of the new campaign.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Afriyie said the football governing body must clearly account for any public funds it receives, arguing that government support comes with a responsibility to ensure transparency in line with FIFA governance principles.

“FIFA says if you go for government money, you must account for it. So if we wake up one day and EOCO and the Office of the Special Prosecutor have invaded the GFA office, what right do we have to question them?” he said.

Afriyie also questioned whether adequate accountability had been provided for government funds previously received by the GFA.

“The money you took even last year, how well have you accounted for it?” he asked.

The former GFA vice-president further urged Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to publicly acknowledge the source of the funding if it originated from government, describing it as the fulfilment of a commitment made to support Ghanaian football.

“The Minister needs to take credit if the money is from government because you fulfilled a campaign promise. So why has the money from the government into our league been kept in secrecy?” he said.

Afriyie stressed that his concerns were not about the GFA receiving financial support from the state, but rather about ensuring clarity on where the funds come from and how they are managed.

“The money is not coming from GFA’s own coffers; it is coming from government, and there’s proof,” he added.

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on 5 September, with clubs set to benefit from the newly announced financial support package.
