Chelsea: Alonso Keeps Penders Decision Under Wraps Ahead of Luton Clash

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has refused to reveal whether Mike Penders will replace Robert Sanchez in goal when the Blues face Luton Town in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.

Sanchez remains Chelsea’s established first-choice goalkeeper, but his display in Monday’s 3-2 Premier League victory over Fulham has renewed questions about his position.

The Spaniard was beaten at the near post by Josh King before another error saw him push the ball into the path of Gonzalo Garcia, who converted for Fulham.

With supporters continuing to scrutinise Sanchez’s performances, Penders has emerged as a potential option for the cup fixture.

Alonso confirmed that the young goalkeeper is included in the squad and therefore remains in contention for a start.

However, the Chelsea boss opted against announcing his selection early, explaining that he wants his players to receive team news from him before it becomes public.

Alonso also provided an update on Chelsea’s injury situation ahead of the Luton encounter.

Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra will both miss the match after also being unavailable for the opening league fixture against Fulham.

Caicedo could be back in contention when Chelsea take on Brighton at the weekend, while Palestra’s condition will require further assessment.

The Luton match could therefore offer Penders an opportunity to make his mark if Alonso decides to rotate his goalkeeper, while Chelsea will hope to progress without further injury setbacks.
