Brentford delivered a commanding performance against Tottenham Hotspur, cruising to a 3-0 victory on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The home side wasted little time asserting themselves, taking the lead in just the 12th minute through Kevin Lewis-Potter, who was set up by an assist from Mikkel Sangaré.

Vitaly Janelt then doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute, giving Brentford a commanding two-goal cushion heading into halftime.

The rout continued shortly after the restart when Michael Kayode found the net in the 49th minute, extending the lead to three goals within the opening hour of play.

Brentford came close to adding a fourth when Igor Thiago was awarded a penalty following a foul by Rodrigo Bentancur in the 53rd minute, but the striker was unable to convert, seeing his spot-kick saved before also striking the post moments later in the same passage of play.

Despite Tottenham controlling more of the possession at 59% compared to Brentford’s 41%, the visitors struggled to translate that dominance into meaningful attacking output, managing just 4 shots on target from their 11 total attempts. Brentford, by contrast, made their opportunities count in clinical fashion.

Both sides made wholesale changes throughout the second half as the result became increasingly settled, with Tottenham introducing key attacking options including James Maddison and Dominic Solanke in search of a way back into the match, though it proved too little to disrupt Brentford’s dominant display.

The result marks a disappointing opening statement for Spurs, while Brentford will take huge confidence from a statement win to begin their campaign.
