Ajayi and Mendy Sink United as Hull City Spring Season-Opening Shock

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Hull City pulled off a stunning upset on the opening day of the Premier League season, beating Manchester United 2-0 at home in a result that will raise plenty of eyebrows across the division.

Semi Ajayi got the hosts off to a dream start, finding the net just 17 minutes in to give Hull an early lead against their heavily-fancied visitors.

The advantage was doubled shortly before the half-hour mark when Nobel Mendy converted from close range, latching onto an assist from Regan Slater to put Hull firmly in control heading into the break.

United struggled to find answers throughout the contest, despite dominating possession at 72% compared to Hull’s 28%.

The Red Devils also had the lion’s share of the attacking output, registering 21 total shots to Hull’s modest 3, along with six corners compared to Hull’s solitary one.

However, clinical finishing and defensive resilience from Hull proved decisive, with only 5 of United’s shots managing to test the goalkeeper directly.

Manchester United’s frustration boiled over at times, with Matt Crooks and Patrick Dorgu both picking up yellow cards for fouls, while Liam Millar was also booked late on for simulation.

United made several changes throughout the match, introducing fresh legs including Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Šeško, and Diogo Dalot as they searched for a way back into the game, but were unable to break down Hull’s defense.

The result marks a disappointing start to the season for United, who will now look to regroup quickly, while Hull City will take enormous confidence from a statement win against one of England’s traditional powerhouses.
