Africa Must Stop Debating Yesterday While the World Builds Tomorrow
Something important is happening across Asia.
Japan is supporting a new generation of space startups. Taiwan is investing in satellite technology. India is expanding opportunities for private space companies. China is accelerating its satellite ambitions as technological competition with the United States deepens. Artificial intelligence is becoming part of the same strategic equation.
Africa should pay attention — not because we suddenly need to start launching rockets, but because these developments reveal where the world is heading.
The real competition is increasingly about knowledge, technology, data, industrial capacity, and economic independence.
And this raises an important question: what are we preparing Africa for?
The World Is Changing Faster Than Our Conversation
Much of Africa’s public conversation remains dominated by politics. Political accountability is necessary, and governments must answer for corruption, unemployment, poor infrastructure, and economic mismanagement.
But there is a difference between discussing politics and allowing politics to consume almost the entire national imagination.
Every controversial statement by a politician can dominate radio and television for days. Party disagreements become national events. Social media erupts over personalities while some of the technological changes that could determine Africa’s economic future receive comparatively little attention.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is discussing artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, robotics, biotechnology, semiconductors, satellites, and the industries that will emerge from them.
Africa cannot afford this imbalance.
Space Technology Is Not Just About Rockets
For Africa, the most important part of the emerging space economy may not even be space travel.
Satellite technology already has practical applications in agriculture, telecommunications, weather forecasting, environmental protection, urban planning, disaster management, and mineral‑resource monitoring.
Imagine using satellite imagery and AI more systematically to detect illegal mining and environmental destruction. Imagine giving farmers better information about rainfall, soil, and crop conditions. Imagine monitoring rapidly expanding cities before uncontrolled development becomes impossible to reverse.
These are African development problems. The technologies already exist.
The question is whether Africa will simply purchase solutions developed elsewhere or build the scientific and industrial capacity to participate in creating them.
Raw Materials Are No Longer Enough
Africa has spent generations exporting cocoa, gold, oil, bauxite, copper, lithium, and other resources while importing higher‑value manufactured products.
We should be careful not to repeat that model in the technological age.
The minerals required for batteries, electronics, renewable energy systems, and advanced technologies may come from Africa, but ownership of the technology, patents, manufacturing systems, and global companies can remain elsewhere.
That is where much of the real economic value will be created.
The challenge therefore goes beyond natural resources. Africa needs stronger research universities, technical institutions, and industries capable of converting knowledge into products.
STEM and TVET education must consequently become part of economic strategy, not simply educational policy.
Change What We Celebrate
Perhaps Africa also needs to reconsider what receives national attention.
A young African developing an agricultural technology company should be as interesting to the media as a politician making a controversial statement.
An African researcher working on artificial intelligence should be someone young people encounter on television.
Universities developing commercially useful research should become part of the national development conversation.
And governments should be judged not only by roads constructed or public programmes launched, but by whether they are building the productive and technological foundations of the next economy.
This requires a change in mindset.
Development cannot remain primarily a debate about distributing today’s resources. It must increasingly become a strategy for creating tomorrow’s capabilities.
Africa Does Not Have to Do It Alone
There is also no reason for every African country to build expensive technological infrastructure independently. Africa can cooperate.
Regional satellite systems, shared research facilities, centres of excellence, common data platforms, and specialist scientific institutions could serve several countries.
African integration should therefore mean more than removing trade barriers and allowing people and goods to cross borders.
It should also mean pooling intellectual and technological resources where cooperation makes economic sense.
A continent fragmented into small technological markets will struggle to compete. A continent that combines its universities, researchers, entrepreneurs, markets, and resources has a much stronger foundation.
A Different Question for Africa
The lesson from Asia’s space race is ultimately not about space. It is about preparation.
Countries are making decisions today based on the industries they believe will matter ten, twenty, and thirty years from now. Africa must do the same.
Our politics will remain important. Elections will remain important. Accountability will remain important. But they cannot become the limits of our national imagination.
The question should no longer be only: Who will govern Africa? We must increasingly ask:
What will Africa produce? What will we invent? What technologies will we master? What industries will employ our young people?
And when the global economy of 2050 arrives, will Africa once again be supplying raw materials and buying finished technologies from others? Or will we finally be among those creating them?
That is a conversation worth occupying our media space.
