The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent building collapses in Anambra and Ogun states, describing the incidents as tragic reminders of the urgent need to strengthen building safety regulations across the country.

Obi, in a statement issued on Wednesday, lamented the collapse of structures in Amaokpala, Anambra State, which reportedly housed, among others, some students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, saying he was saddened by the loss of two lives in the incident.

While noting that the deceased were not students of the institution, the former Anambra State governor extended his condolences to their families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

“The collapse of structures housing, among others, some students of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Amaokpala, Anambra State, is deeply distressing. I am saddened by the tragic loss of two lives in this unfortunate incident,” Obi said.

He also reacted to the reported building collapse in Ogun State, which occurred only days after the Anambra tragedy, saying the back-to-back incidents underscored the need for authorities to place greater emphasis on public safety.

“Coming barely days after the unfortunate similar incident at Amaokpala, the reported collapse of a building in Ogun State, with the loss of lives, is another painful reminder of the urgent need to prioritise the safety of our people,” he stated.

Obi commended the governments of Anambra and Ogun states, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, emergency responders, security agencies, and other rescue personnel for their prompt intervention, noting that their coordinated efforts helped prevent more casualties.

He urged governments and regulatory agencies nationwide to enforce building regulations more rigorously, ensure compliance with approved construction standards, and carry out regular structural integrity assessments to avert avoidable disasters.

According to him, the safety and welfare of citizens, particularly young people, must remain a key priority in the country’s development agenda.

“The safety and welfare of our citizens, especially our young people, must remain central to our development efforts. We must continue to invest not only in educational infrastructure but also in ensuring that every environment in which our people live and learn is safe and fit for purpose,” Obi said.

He offered prayers for the victims and their families, asking God to grant eternal rest to those who lost their lives, comfort the bereaved, and speed the recovery of those injured.

Obi reiterated his commitment to supporting students and investing in their education, safety and well-being.
