Former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi says he will campaign for former Ghana captain André Ayew to become the next president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Mikel made the comments while speaking on his Obi One Podcast, where he discussed Ayew’s future in football and his potential role in the administration of the game in Ghana.

The former Nigeria international has backed Ayew’s leadership qualities, saying the ex-Black Stars captain could be the person to bring change to Ghana football.

Mikel referred to Ayew as a top player and a great human being and said he could be capable of making a difference in Ghanaian football administration.

However, Ayew himself has not announced a bid for the GFA presidency. On the same podcast, the 36-year-old said he was not currently focused on becoming GFA president.

Ayew has also confirmed his involvement in football administration. He revealed that he has been the Chief Executive Officer of FC Nania, the Division One League club founded by his father and Ghana football sensation Abedi Pele, for several years.

Reports link him to a potential GFA presidential bid in 2027 but there has, however, been no formal declaration of his candidacy.

Current GFA president Kurt Okraku was re-elected for a second four-year term in October 2023 after receiving 117 of the 120 votes cast.
