Yohanna Handed Debut as Brighton Held to Stalemate by Tromsø in Europe
Zadok Yohanna got his first taste of competitive action for Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday, coming off the bench during a scoreless draw with Tromsø in the opening leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff clash at the Romssa Arena.
The teenager, aged 19, entered the fray in the 87th minute, taking over from Ferdi Kadioglu as Brighton searched for a breakthrough late on.
Despite controlling large portions of the match, the Seagulls found themselves unable to break down a stubborn Tromsø backline. Brighton peppered the Norwegian side’s goal with 25 attempts across the ninety minutes, though only six of those shots tested the goalkeeper directly.
Yohanna, who arrived at the Amex Stadium this summer following his switch from Swedish outfit AIK, will get the chance to introduce himself to the home crowd when the two sides meet again next Thursday for the second leg.
That return fixture carries significant weight, with the aggregate winner advancing to the group stage of next season’s Europa Conference League campaign.
For Yohanna personally, the appearance marks the beginning of what he’ll hope is a productive first season in English football.
Making a competitive debut in a European playoff tie even a brief cameo offers a glimpse of the opportunities that could follow if he continues to impress in training and earns further chances from the coaching staff as the campaign progresses.
