The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed regret over the outcome, acknowledging the disappointment among millions of Nigerians who had expected the African champions to deliver a stronger result.

According to the federation, the Super Falcons entered the competition with significant backing from the Federal Government and carried the expectations of supporters across the country.

Gusau said the NFF was therefore disappointed that the team had not been able to produce the outcome expected at this stage.

The federation particularly acknowledged President Tinubu’s support for Nigerian sports and women’s football. It also recalled the recognition and rewards given to the Super Falcons following their previous WAFCON success.

Beyond the presidency, the NFF extended its apology to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and Nigerian fans at home and abroad.

Despite the setback, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 World Cup have not completely disappeared. The federation said the Super Falcons still have a route through the CAF play-offs, with two World Cup places available, before a possible FIFA play-off tournament.

Gusau assured Nigerians that the federation would review the team’s preparations, technical planning, logistics and other aspects of its campaign.

He also called for continued support as the Super Falcons regroup and attempt to secure their place at the global tournament through the remaining qualification route.
