Update: Katsina United defender Chinedu Ozor in ICU after shocking medical development
Nigerian footballer Chinedu Ozor is reportedly receiving intensive medical care after an alarming incident during a pre-season fixture in Katsina.
The Katsina United defender collapsed early in the team’s friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Tuesday.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where a doctor reportedly declared him dead.
Following the pronouncement, Katsina United announced the player’s death, leading to an outpouring of condolences from football clubs and supporters.
Ozor’s former teams, including Kano Pillars and Heartland, were among those who expressed their sympathy.
However, the situation reportedly took an unexpected turn after the player was taken to the mortuary. Reports indicate that medical personnel noticed movement and raised an alarm.
He was subsequently taken back to the hospital for further medical attention.
Ozor was later placed in intensive care at Katsina General Hospital, where he is reportedly receiving oxygen and treatment.
Katsina United media officer Nasir Gide confirmed that the club followed the procedures available to them after Ozor was initially pronounced dead.
He said the player had been taken to two medical facilities and was declared dead before the latest development.
The circumstances surrounding the initial pronouncement remain unclear, as neither Katsina United nor Katsina General Hospital had issued a comprehensive official statement on his condition at the time of the report.
The 30-year-old right-back joined Katsina United this season after previous spells with Abia Warriors, Lobi Stars, Sunshine Stars, Heartland and Kano Pillars. The football community continues to await further updates on his condition.
