University of Pennsylvania Welcomes Professor Ibrahim Gambari as Distinguished Scholar

The University of Pennsylvania has appointed Professor Ibrahim Gambari as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at its Center for Africana Studies. The former United Nations envoy and Chief of Staff to the late Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is set to hold the position from January 1 through August 31, 2026.
The Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development in Abuja announced the appointment on Monday. According to a statement from Executive Director Ambassador Sani Bala, the invitation was formalised in a letter from Professor Wale Adebanwi, the Director of the Center for Africana Studies at the Ivy League institution.
A Legacy of Global Service
This academic residency recognizes Professor Gambari for his extensive contributions to international diplomacy, governance, and peacebuilding. During his tenure in Philadelphia, he will mentor students and collaborate with fellow researchers to share insights on global development and the complexities of modern governance.
The Savannah Centre highlighted that this partnership will foster a stronger exchange of knowledge between African scholars and the international academic community. They expressed confidence that Gambari’s reputation for excellence will enhance the university’s existing research capabilities.

The Savannah Centre noted that his expertise remains in high demand globally, reflecting a lifelong commitment to scholarship and diplomatic excellence. While the initial appointment concludes in August 2026, the university has indicated that there is a possibility for renewal.
