Tribute To Mene Elder Benda Konwi

Tribute To Mene Elder Benda Konwi
On August 9, 2026, Mene Elder Benda Konwi transited in his early 80s, leaving a legacy of over 30 years of devoted service to the Distinct Ogoni Nation (DON).
An exceptionally dynamic customary and traditional practitioner, Mene Konwi was a foundational pillar of Ogoni self-determination. He famously declared before a crowded elders’ session: “We are not going to allow things the way they’ve been. We have to make things change now.”
His inspiring leadership galvanized his peers within the Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers Association (COTRA), which evolved into today’s Ogoni Traditional Rulers Council (OTRC). Mene Konwi served with distinction as both Vice Chairman and Chairman of the OTRC for nearly a decade. Alongside Ken Saro-Wiwa, he was one of two chief hosts for the historic launch of the National Youth Council of the Ogoni People (NYCOP) in Teyork.
Late Mene Elder Benda Konwi
Throughout his revered tenure, his native wisdom and modesty defined his exemplary team leadership. He consistently placed the collective interest above personal gain. Under my transitional leadership as MOSOP President/Spokesman through to the historic Ogoni Self-Government Declaration on August 2, 2026, he played a crucial role in steering the nation toward autonomy.
Mene Konwi’s contributions spanned every facet of Ogoni governance and culture. As a traditional judge and peacemaker under the Ogoni Traditional Justice System (OTJS), he resolved disputes and guided generations in ancestral customs. He served vital roles on the Elders’ Peace and Security Council, the Bua Teyork Elders Council, and as an outstanding farmer, chaired the OCIA Food Security Guardians. Driven by his core conviction—“we must lay a solid foundation for the new to take hold”—he spent his life building the bedrock of the modern Ogoni nation.
His passing brings a profound sense of loss, balanced by deep fulfillment for a life completely spent in service. We take comfort knowing he lived to see his highest wishes for our nation realized.
Thank you, Mene Elder Benda Konwi, for your profound teachings and unyielding belief, which have left the Ogoni nation forever better. May peace, love, and individual self-sacrifice continue to make the Distinct Ogoni Nation shine.
