The Borno State Police Command has officially confirmed a devastating toll of 23 fatalities and 108 injuries following a series of coordinated suicide attacks that rocked Maiduguri on Monday evening. At approximately 7:24 p.m., suspected insurgents detonated improvised explosive devices across several high traffic locations, turning the city’s commercial and educational hubs into scenes of absolute chaos.

Targeted Destruction at the Heart of Borno

According to police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso, the attackers strategically targeted three of the city’s most sensitive areas. The blasts ripped through the Maiduguri Central Market, also known as the Monday Market, as well as the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the Post Office Flyover. These locations are central to daily life in the region, ensuring the maximum possible impact on the civilian population.

Security Response and Emergency Measures

In the immediate aftermath of the explosions, a massive joint task force comprising police tactical units and military personnel moved to cordon off the sites. Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams performed sweeps to clear any remaining threats while emergency responders from NEMA and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency worked through the night to evacuate victims to local medical facilities.

A State in Mourning

Police Commissioner Naziru Abdulmajid conducted an on the spot assessment of the damage and offered condolences to the grieving families. While security forces have intensified patrols and claim that normalcy has been restored to the metropolis, the scale of this tragedy has left the community in a state of high alert.
