The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the senator representing Osun East, Francis Fadahunsi, to retract his alleged threat against members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun and tender an apology to the people of the state.

Obi described the reported comments attributed to Fadahunsi as inflammatory and capable of heightening political tension and inciting electoral violence.

In a statement, the former Anambra State governor expressed “deep regret and profound concern” over the senator’s alleged remarks, stressing that public officials, particularly lawmakers, have a responsibility to protect democratic values and promote peace.

“As a high-ranking lawmaker representing the people in the National Assembly, Senator Fadahunsi carries a solemn constitutional and moral responsibility to promote peace, uphold democratic norms, and foster unity,” Obi said.

He added that it was “alarming and unacceptable” for a senator to allegedly use intimidation, incendiary remarks or political threats that could frighten voters and potentially trigger violence ahead of the election.

Obi said elections should be a peaceful exercise through which citizens freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment or coercion.

According to him, resorting to threats of force or disruption undermines the integrity of the electoral process, disrespects voters and threatens the peace of Osun State.

“I therefore respectfully demand that Senator Fadahunsi retract these harmful statements and tender an apology to the peaceful people of Osun State,” he said.

The NDC presidential candidate also urged political leaders, stakeholders and party supporters across political divides to exercise restraint and moderate their rhetoric before, during and after the election.

He called on security agencies to closely monitor inflammatory statements and ensure the protection of citizens, voters and election officials irrespective of their political affiliations.

Obi maintained that the outcome of the election must reflect the will of the electorate, warning that no individual, irrespective of political position, should attempt to influence voters through fear or coercion.

“The democratic mandate belongs to the people, and no individual, regardless of status or political office, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion,” he said.

He further urged residents of Osun State to remain calm and peaceful while exercising their constitutional right to vote.

“Getting elections right is a necessary step towards a New Nigeria that is POssible,” Obi added.
