Teen #EndSARS Protester Jailed at 17 Freed After Five Years With No Evidence

A young Nigerian man arrested at age 17 during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests against police brutality has walked free after more than five years behind bars. The Lagos State High Court struck out the case on March 4 2026 following an application by pro bono lawyers from Citizens’ Gavel who argued lack of diligent prosecution.
Court records showed the prosecution repeatedly failed to present any witness or evidence to support grave charges including unlawful possession of firearms with intent to commit robbery and impersonating armed forces personnel. No proof ever emerged to link him to these allegations.
The legal team stepped in during 2024 after the young man’s original lawyer passed away with the matter referred by The Initiative for Better Movement. Multiple adjournments plagued the proceedings until the court finally granted freedom allowing him to reunite with family.
A photograph shared by Citizens’ Gavel captures the moment outside the courthouse. It shows the former detainee visibly emaciated and frail next to his lawyer highlighting the severe physical toll of prolonged unjust imprisonment in overcrowded facilities.
This case underscores Nigeria’s deep correctional crisis. As of February 2026 official figures from the Nigeria Correctional Service report 80812 inmates nationwide with 64 percent or 51955 people still awaiting trial. Facilities exceed capacity contributing to malnutrition poor health conditions and extended pretrial suffering documented by human rights groups since the #EndSARS movement began.
Citizens’ Gavel continues calling for information on other detained protesters from #EndSARS and related demonstrations urging an end to punishment for exercising constitutional rights. Their work through technology and pro bono advocacy offers hope amid systemic delays but true reform remains urgent to prevent more lives from being lost to injustice.
