Spain Crowned 2026 World Cup Champions After Extra-Time Victory Over Argentina

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Spain claimed the 2026 FIFA World Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in a tense final that was settled after extra time.

Both sides produced a tactical contest filled with discipline, intensity and few clear-cut opportunities during the regulation 90 minutes.

Spain dominated possession for long spells, patiently moving the ball across the pitch, while Argentina relied on a compact defensive setup and looked to threaten on the counterattack.

Despite Spain’s control, Argentina’s defence remained resilient, frustrating the European side and forcing the match into extra time.

The South Americans also suffered setbacks through injuries and disciplinary issues, making the challenge even tougher as the game wore on.

The decisive moment arrived in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres found the back of the net after being set up by Nico Williams.

The goal proved enough to separate the two teams and handed Spain their first World Cup triumph since 2010.

Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Spain’s defence held firm to protect the narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The South Americans’ hopes were further damaged after Enzo Fernández was sent off late in the contest, leaving his side with ten men during the closing stages.

Statistically, Spain controlled the match, enjoying the majority of possession while creating significantly more attacking opportunities.

Argentina, however, defended bravely and remained competitive throughout despite managing very few attempts on goal.

The victory capped an impressive tournament for Spain, whose blend of disciplined defending, midfield control and clinical finishing guided them to football’s biggest prize.

For Argentina, the defeat ended another memorable World Cup campaign just one goal short of retaining the trophy.
