Senegal Part Ways With Pape Thiaw Following World Cup Exit
Senegal have parted ways with head coach Pape Thiaw following the national team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending his time in charge after less than two years at the helm.
The decision was confirmed by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), which also relieved the entire technical crew of their duties as part of a broader restructuring of the senior national team.
The move follows growing calls for change after Senegal failed to progress beyond the Round of 32.
The Lions of Teranga appeared to be on course for victory in their knockout clash against Belgium after establishing a two-goal lead.
However, the match slipped away as Belgium staged a remarkable comeback to claim a 3-2 extra-time victory, eliminating the African side from the tournament and triggering widespread disappointment among supporters.
Thiaw took over as Senegal’s head coach in late 2024 after the departure of long-serving manager Aliou Cissé. During his tenure, he successfully guided the team to World Cup qualification and also led the country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite those achievements, inconsistent performances and off-field controversies raised questions about the team’s direction.
In the aftermath of the World Cup exit, pressure mounted on the federation to make significant changes, with many fans demanding a fresh start ahead of future competitions.
The FSF will now begin the search for a new manager capable of rebuilding the squad and restoring Senegal’s reputation as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
An announcement regarding an interim coach or permanent appointment is expected in the coming weeks as preparations begin for upcoming international fixtures.
