Sandema carpenter hospitalized after alleged military brutality for calling on govt to fix Chuchuliga-Sandema-Wiesi road

MON, 24 AUG 2026

A young carpenter and development advocate known as Way Maker is receiving treatment at the Sandema Hospital after allegedly being brutalized by military personnel at the local barracks on Saturday evening, August 22, 2026.

According to Facebook activist Lawrence Abakisi, Way Maker was reportedly picked up from his carpentry shop by soldiers and subjected to severe beatings. Photographs circulating online show visible marks consistent with the alleged assault. His supposed offence, per the accounts, was his persistent advocacy for the construction of the Chuchuliga–Sandema–Wiesi road, a project under the government’s Big Push infrastructure agenda.

This incident is the second reported case of military brutality in Sandema within three days. Earlier in the week, a bar operator allegedly lost GHS20,000 after being assaulted in a separate encounter.

Abakisi has accused Municipal Chief Executive and MUSEC Chairperson Solomon Akogti of supervising what he describes as unfair treatment of residents. He is calling on Builsa North MP James Agalga and the MCE to intervene and demand justice.

While acknowledging Sandema’s historically cordial relationship with the military, Abakisi cautioned that soldiers must not exceed their lawful authority.

He urged authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that any officers found culpable are held accountable.
