Paredes, Molina Handed Bans as FIFA Punishes Post-Final Chaos

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Argentina’s Leandro Paredes has been slapped with a 10-match suspension by FIFA following his involvement in the chaotic scenes that erupted after his country’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final.

Fellow midfielder Nahuel Molina also received a seven-match ban after being implicated in the same post-match disorder at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

According to BBC Sport, the punishments stem from FIFA’s formal inquiry into the unruly aftermath of Spain’s title winning triumph.

Paredes was reportedly caught up in physical confrontations with Spanish players, while Molina faced accusations of hitting Spain skipper Rodri during the celebrations.

FIFA had pursued multiple assault-related charges against both players before reaching its verdict.

Beyond the individual sanctions, the Argentine Football Association itself was penalized financially, fined roughly $321,000 for a string of conduct violations spanning discriminatory chanting from fans, wider team misbehavior, and using the tournament stage for non-sporting statements.

As part of the punishment, Argentina must play their next two home fixtures under spectator restrictions, though one of those two sanctions has been suspended.

Much of this stemmed from a political banner Argentina’s players unveiled after defeating England in the semi-final, a display referencing Argentine claims over the Falkland Islands territory FIFA deemed inappropriate to raise given rules against non-sporting demonstrations at matches.

The rulings close out a contentious chapter for Argentina, whose World Cup run ended in extra-time heartbreak against Spain on July 19.
