Otumfuo announces Nana Ama Bonsu as new Asantehemaa to Kumasi Traditional Council

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially announced to the Kumasi Traditional Council the appointment of Nana Ama Bonsu as the new Asantehemaa.

Born Margaret Serebour, she has ascended the Kusiamoah Stool and has been enstooled as Nana Yaa Akyaa II, becoming the 15th Asantehemaa in the history of the Asante Kingdom.

The announcement formally begins the transition following the passing of the previous occupant.

As part of tradition, the Gyaase Division of the Manhyia Palace on Thursday presented drinks and cash to members of the Kumasi Traditional Council and the Asanteman Council.

The gesture is in accordance with custom ahead of the formal enstoolment and public announcement of a new queenmother.

Following the traditional rites, the Asantehene called on the new queen to welcome her into office.

Members of the Council subsequently took turns to pay homage to her, affirming their support as she prepares to take on her responsibilities as mother of the kingdom.

Nana Yaa Akyaa II has already sat in state for the second time to receive homage.

She succeeds Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who joined her ancestors in August 2025.

The late Asantehemaa was remembered for her dedicated service to the Golden Stool and the people of Asanteman.

Nana Ama Bonsu was selected by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in accordance with the laid-down traditional processes of the kingdom.

Plans are underway for her formal outdooring as Asanteman prepares to welcome its new queenmother.
