Nursing Students at NAUTH Nnewi Stage Protest Over 544.44% Fee Hike

On March 10, 2026, students from the College of Nursing Sciences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, took to the streets in a peaceful demonstration. They voiced strong opposition to a dramatic increase in their tuition fees.
The institution recently raised the school fees from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000 per session. This represents a surge of more than 500 percent. Many students and observers described the adjustment as shocking and unaffordable, especially given Nigeria’s current economic challenges and the national minimum wage of ₦70,000.
Videos circulating online captured dozens of students, dressed in white nursing uniforms, marching with placards and chanting slogans. Messages on signs included calls against the fee increase and expressions of frustration with the decision. Protesters also highlighted poor hostel conditions and compulsory accommodation costs that add further financial strain despite the high payments required.
The protest unfolded outside the hospital premises and reportedly extended to parts of Nnewi town. Participants demanded a review of the new fee structure and improvements to living facilities.
Management of the College of Nursing Sciences indicated earlier that discussions were underway with student representatives to address concerns. The Students’ Union Government had previously stated engagements with authorities were in progress. No immediate resolution was confirmed following the demonstration.
This event reflects wider anxieties among Nigerian students about rising education costs amid economic pressures. Many online commentators expressed solidarity with the protesters and criticized the scale of the increment. The situation continues to draw attention as stakeholders await further developments from the institution.
