Davidson Owumi, Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has called on clubs across the top flight to strengthen their digital presence, warning that failure to maintain functional official websites could result in the loss of their club licences.

Owumi issued the warning during a media and marketing workshop held in Enugu, where club media officers, directors, and marketing personnel gathered to discuss strategies for improving the commercial value and public image of Nigerian football.

According to the NPFL executive, many clubs are missing out on lucrative sponsorship opportunities because they lack reliable online platforms where fans, partners, and investors can access accurate information.

He stressed that sponsors increasingly expect professional digital operations before committing resources to clubs or competitions.

Owumi explained that official websites should serve as central hubs for club news, player profiles, fixtures, match reports, and commercial activities.

Without such platforms, clubs risk appearing unprofessional and less attractive to potential investors.

He also urged club management to invest more heavily in their media departments, describing them as a vital link between clubs and supporters.

Rather than assigning multiple responsibilities to one individual, Owumi recommended building dedicated media teams with specialists in photography, videography, content creation, graphic design, social media management, and public relations.

The NPFL is expected to introduce stricter licensing requirements to ensure clubs comply with these standards. Owumi believes stronger media structures and improved digital engagement will enhance the league’s credibility, increase fan interaction, and attract greater commercial investment.

He maintained that embracing professionalism on and off the pitch is essential if Nigerian clubs are to compete successfully in the modern football business landscape.
