Nigerian Navy Thwarts Massive Rivers State Fuel Smuggling Ring After High Stakes Midnight Chase

The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on economic sabotage after a daring midnight operation in Rivers State led to the arrest of eight suspected oil thieves and the recovery of 44,000 litres of illegally refined diesel. Operating under the strategic mandate of Operation Delta Sentinel, personnel from the NNS Pathfinder intercepted the illicit shipment in the early hours of Sunday near the Degema and Obologo waterways.
Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Mutalib Ibikunle Raji, confirmed that the seizure was the result of high-level intelligence tracking. During the encounter, the naval patrol team was met by armed escorts protecting the contraband, though the gunmen fled into the mangroves upon sighting the military vessel. A thorough search of the abandoned craft revealed 423 sacks filled with Automotive Gas Oil, totaling a massive haul destined for the black market.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has made it clear that protecting Nigeria’s maritime borders from such sophisticated theft is a top priority for national security. Following the raid, the Nigerian Navy officially handed over the eight suspects and the confiscated fuel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further legal action.
EFCC Superintendent Blessing Emereole has launched a formal investigation into the network, promising that all individuals involved in the syndicate will face the full weight of the law. Despite the evidence, the alleged ringleader of the group, a man identified as Sokari, told reporters that he was merely a hired laborer and claimed ignorance regarding the illegal nature of the bunkering operation. This latest success by the Navy highlights the ongoing and dangerous battle to dismantle the illegal refining networks that continue to drain Nigeria’s natural resources and damage the Niger Delta environment.
