A 21-year-old Nigerian basketball player, Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega, has been arrested in the United States over an allegation of rape, leading to his suspension from the Jacksonville State men’s basketball team while legal proceedings continue.

According to reports, the athlete was taken into custody in Alabama and is currently being held pending a bond hearing.

Court documents allege that the incident occurred last week, with prosecutors accusing him of engaging in sexual intercourse through forcible compulsion. The case remains under investigation.

Authorities also indicated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a hold on the player while the legal process unfolds.

However, no court has determined his guilt, and the allegation has not yet been proven. Under the law, Adegboyega is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Jacksonville State University has confirmed that the Nigerian centre has been suspended indefinitely from all basketball-related activities following his arrest.

The institution has not released further details but is expected to continue monitoring developments in the case.

Adegboyega joined Jacksonville State earlier this year after spending the previous season at California Baptist.

Before that, he played for the University of South Florida and had initially committed to Kennesaw State after completing high school in Iowa.

Standing at seven feet tall, the Nigerian has featured in 27 collegiate basketball games during his career, making five starts while contributing as a centre.

Although his playing statistics have been modest, he had continued to pursue opportunities at the college level before the latest development interrupted his career.

The arrest has attracted attention both in Nigeria and the United States due to Adegboyega’s sporting background.

As investigations continue, prosecutors are expected to present their case in court, while the player’s legal representatives will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
