Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens opened their campaign in the 2028 ICC U-19 Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier on a disappointing note after Uganda secured a five-wicket victory in Rwanda.

Nigeria were asked to bat first and struggled to build a strong total despite a brilliant individual performance from Kenneth Boniface.

The batter produced 97 runs from 107 deliveries and carried much of Nigeria’s innings.

Okasha Isiyaku was the only other Nigerian batter to make a significant contribution, scoring 34 runs from 81 balls.

The rest of the batting order failed to reach double figures as Nigeria were eventually dismissed for 176 after 45 overs.

Uganda’s bowlers Felix Ocan and Larry Elton were particularly effective, with each taking three Nigerian wickets.

The Ugandan side approached the chase with greater consistency and reached 178 for five in 38.2 overs to complete the victory. Captain Samuel Ahaisibwe led the successful pursuit with an impressive 72 from 90 balls.

For Nigeria, Pelumi Orimoloye was the standout bowler, taking two wickets, but his effort could not prevent Uganda from claiming the points.

The Junior Yellow Greens must now quickly regroup as they prepare to face Ghana in their next fixture. Nigeria will be looking for a stronger all-round performance to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The top three teams in the Division 2 competition will advance to Division 1, where they will join Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania.
