Michael Olise etched his name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming the player with the most assists in a single tournament, surpassing a record that had stood for more than five decades.

The French playmaker achieved the milestone during France’s thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff.

Olise registered two assists in the high-scoring encounter, taking his tournament total to seven and moving ahead of Brazilian legend Pelé, who recorded six assists during the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

Olise’s outstanding campaign began in France’s opening match, where he set up Kylian Mbappé in a convincing victory over Senegal.

He continued to showcase his creativity by producing two assists against Iraq before repeating the feat in the clash with Sweden, leaving him just one assist short of equalling the long-standing record.

Against England, Olise once again proved decisive in attack by creating two more goals for Mbappé. Although France fell short in an entertaining 10-goal contest, the 24-year-old’s achievement became one of the tournament’s biggest individual highlights.

The Bayern Munich winger has enjoyed a remarkable year, carrying his impressive club form onto the international stage.

After starring for the Bundesliga champions throughout the 2025/26 season with goals and assists in abundance, he has now cemented his reputation as one of the world’s finest creative midfielders.

While France missed out on a podium finish, Olise leaves the tournament with a historic accomplishment that rewrites the World Cup record books and further strengthens his status among football’s elite playmakers.
