By Okiki Oluwasegun

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has admitted he is eagerly anticipating his first-ever international meeting with England as the reigning world champions prepare for a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final showdown.

The veteran forward revealed that England is the only major football nation he has never faced during his illustrious career, making Wednesday’s encounter in Atlanta a unique milestone.

While Messi has competed against some of the world’s biggest football powers over the years, the Three Lions have remained the one notable exception.

Argentina secured their place in the last four after overcoming Switzerland 3-1 following extra time in a thrilling quarter-final.

England also needed an additional 30 minutes to edge past Norway 2-1, setting up a blockbuster clash between two of international football’s most successful nations.

Messi acknowledged the rich history between both countries but stressed that his focus remains firmly on helping Argentina reach another World Cup final.

He described England as one of the strongest teams in world football and expects a fiercely contested encounter between two talented squads.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also praised the mentality within Argentina’s dressing room, insisting the players remain hungry for more success despite already winning the FIFA World Cup and Copa América in recent years.

According to Messi, the current generation continues to push itself to maintain the high standards that have defined the team over the past few seasons.

With a place in the World Cup final at stake, all eyes will be on Messi as he prepares to face England for the first time.

The Argentine legend will be hoping his experience and leadership can inspire his side to another memorable victory in what promises to be one of the tournament’s biggest matches.
