Mahama was notified of heavy rains four months before June 29 floods — Kofi Tonto alleges

Kofi Tonto, a political aide to the 2028 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama was warned about the likelihood of heavy rains four months before the June 29 floods but failed to act.

The allegation follows the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra after hours of heavy rainfall on Monday, June 29, which resulted in about 30 deaths, over 38,000 residents displaced and properties destroyed.

The claim also comes after President Mahama, following an aerial inspection of the affected communities, attributed the flooding partly to changing climatic conditions and human activities, including illegal construction in waterways and poor environmental practices.

Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme on Monday, July 6, Tonto criticised the President for what he described as a failure to act on an early warning from the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

“The Ghana Meteorological Agency wrote to warn the President four months in advance. Four months ooo. What did you do with that warning? Nothing, absolutely nothing. No urgency, no care, nothing,” he said.

He argued that Ghanaians elected the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to address the country’s challenges rather than offer explanations after disasters occur.

“In 2024, Ghanaians voted for the NDC to deliver and not to make excuses. Now when it was his turn to deliver, Prez Mahama blamed the topography, blamed the rain and then blamed the indiscipline of Ghanaians. Everyone was to blame except the President and his government,” stated Tonto.

Tonto further noted that the government’s response to the floods has fallen short of public expectations.

According to him, the administration should have taken preventive measures after receiving the reported weather warning.
