La Liga officials are preparing to inspect Celta Vigo’s Estadio de Balaídos after concerns emerged about the condition of the pitch ahead of the club’s first league game of the 2026/27 season.

Celta Vigo are due to welcome Osasuna on Sunday, but the fixture could be affected if the playing surface is considered unsuitable.

Reports indicate that a suspected fungus has damaged sections of the pitch, prompting the league authorities to assess whether it is safe for competitive action.

Celta have reportedly asked for the match to be postponed because of the problem, while Osasuna are said to be willing to play as originally scheduled.

The inspection, expected within the next day, will ultimately determine the next step.

The Balaídos stadium recently hosted Spain’s international friendly against Iraq in June, shortly before Spain went on to claim the 2026 World Cup.

The venue has also been undergoing extensive redevelopment for several years and is expected to be one of Spain’s stadiums for the 2030 World Cup.

Its capacity could eventually rise from about 24,870 to between 40,000 and 44,000 spectators.

Celta had earlier been offered the opportunity to delay their opening fixture because Borja Iglesias was part of Spain’s World Cup squad, but the club declined.

The decision on the pitch could now force another change to their opening-weekend plans.
