Klopp Emerges as Favourite for Germany Job After Nagelsmann’s Exit

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Germany are set to begin the search for a new national team manager following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation in the aftermath of the country’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The 38-year-old stepped down after Germany suffered a surprise Round of 32 elimination against Paraguay. The four-time world champions were beaten in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time, bringing their tournament to an abrupt end.

The German Football Association confirmed Nagelsmann’s departure on Friday, thanking him for his commitment and dedication since taking charge in September 2023.

The federation praised his professionalism and ambition during his time with the national team.

Attention has now shifted to former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Nagelsmann.

German football officials are expected to hold discussions with Klopp after he reportedly indicated he would be open to taking charge of the national team.

Klopp has not managed a club since leaving Liverpool in 2024 and currently serves in a senior football role within the Red Bull organisation.

However, reports suggest his agreement includes a clause that could allow him to accept the Germany position if an offer is made.

Nagelsmann’s tenure included guiding Germany to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, but the team’s latest World Cup disappointment ultimately proved costly.

Should Klopp accept the role, he would take charge of the national team for the first time in his coaching career, with supporters hoping his experience and leadership can restore Germany to the top level of international football ahead of future major tournaments.
