Kenya faces a national emergency as rising floodwaters claim 62 lives across the country.

The Kenyan government has confirmed a devastating death toll following a week of relentless torrential rains that have submerged entire communities and crippled national infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the fatalities include forty-six men, eight women, and eight children, with the capital city of Nairobi bearing the brunt of the disaster after recording thirty-three deaths.

Beyond the tragic loss of life, the surge has displaced over twelve thousand households across eighteen counties. Major transport arteries and bridges have become impassable, while essential services including schools, power grids, and water supply lines have suffered extensive damage. The Rift Valley and Eastern regions have also reported significant casualties as the National Disaster Management Unit struggles to locate several individuals still marked as missing.

In response to the crisis, officials have identified nearly forty high risk zones along the Nairobi Rivers corridors that remain extremely vulnerable to further surges. As residential areas and marketplaces continue to sit under water, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a grim forecast of more large scale rainfall and flash hazards. Authorities are now urging residents in low lying areas to evacuate immediately as the country enters a perilous new phase of its rainy season.
