The Kano State Sharia Commission has prohibited commercial tricycle (keke) riders from carrying female passengers on the sides of their vehicles, a practice commonly known as “attachment”.

The directive was announced by the Commission’s Second Commissioner, Sheikh Ali Danabba, during a meeting with executives of the Tricycle Owners and Riders Association (BOTORA), held to strengthen collaboration and improve order within Kano’s commercial tricycle transport sector.

Danabba said the practice must cease with immediate effect because it involves unnecessary physical contact between male riders and female passengers, which he described as inconsistent with Islamic law.

“The practice is banned under Islamic law because it involves unnecessary physical closeness between male riders and female passengers,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the engagement with BOTORA was aimed at deepening cooperation between the association and the Sharia Commission in tackling challenges affecting commercial tricycle operations across the state.

Beyond the ban, discussions at the meeting also focused on measures to curb child abduction, combat drug abuse and trafficking, and instill discipline and responsible conduct among tricycle operators.

Danabba called on commercial riders to comply with the new directive and support the commission’s efforts to uphold moral values, maintain public order, and enhance safety across Kano State.

In response, the BOTORA chairman pledged the association’s full cooperation with the Sharia Commission, assuring that members would support initiatives aimed at promoting public safety, social order, and the overall development of the state.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Ali Danabba, Commissioner Gwani Dahir Yakasai, senior officials of the Kano State Sharia Commission, and members of BOTORA’s leadership.
