Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised the club’s supporters for the reception he received during his first home game at Stamford Bridge, describing the occasion as an emotional experience.

The Spanish coach was welcomed by a strong ovation from Chelsea fans before the team’s final pre-season fixture, a reception that he said made his first appearance at the stadium in his new role particularly memorable.

Alonso said the support from the stands was important as Chelsea prepare for the new Premier League campaign.

He stressed that developing a strong bond between the players and supporters would be key to creating a positive atmosphere around the club.

The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager also assessed Chelsea’s final preparation match, saying it provided the squad with a useful opportunity to improve their fitness and work on areas that still require attention.

With the season opener against Fulham approaching, Alonso said having the entire squad together was encouraging.

Some players were able to feature for about an hour as they continued building their match fitness.
