Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has revealed that he sensed his second spell in charge of Ghana could have ended just weeks after his appointment, citing growing tensions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Addo, 50, returned as Black Stars coach in March 2024 but was relieved of his duties two years later after a poor run of results, despite successfully guiding Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His dismissal was confirmed following Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly, bringing his second stint with the national team to an end just 72 days before the World Cup.

The GFA subsequently appointed experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal to lead the Black Stars at the tournament.

Speaking to German football magazine 11Freunde, Addo said he was never informed of the reasons behind his dismissal and admitted he chose not to seek an explanation from the football governing body.

“Honestly, I still haven’t been given a reason [for my sacking] to this day, and honestly, I didn’t ask either,” Addo said.

The former Ghana international also opened up about the strained relationship he had with GFA officials during his tenure, revealing that he had long feared his position was under threat.

“There was, of course, a lot of back-and-forth between me, our federation president, and the board as well. It just felt like I could have been sacked after just one month,” he added.

According to Addo, tensions intensified after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), ending the country’s 21-year streak of appearances at the continental championship.

Although he later steered the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the achievement was not enough to secure his future, with the GFA opting for a coaching change less than two months before the tournament.

Following his exit, Addo joined FIFA’s Technical Study Group for the World Cup, while Queiroz took charge of the Black Stars for the global showpiece.
